For this Cape Cod engagement shoot, we wanted to capture the couple’s love in a natural setting. Sea Gull Beach in Yarmouth MA provided the perfect backdrop for their photos as it’s a beach they would frequently walk. We opted for a sunrise shoot, as Cape beaches are always so packed, so going early allowed us to have the whole beach to ourselves.
I took a documentary approach, letting the couple interact naturally without forced poses. The best way for natural photos is to five prompts of activities they would do on an every day basis. I always tell my couples, “doing a pose you’ve never done in your life won’t make you feel natural”. So letting the couple to “just be” allowed us to capture candid moments of their love and happiness. We love to provide space for the couple to feel relaxed, easy going, and express their feelings for each other in a genuine way.

It’s important to plan ahead when it comes to your Cape Cod Engagement. Before every engagement session, I do a location scouting to see what the light will be like and what the business will be. Especially when you are going early in the morning, it’s important to know these things ahead of time to hit the ground running. I build a storyboard in my head of the locations and prompts. Having stellar preparation gives my couples the confidence that their photos will be incredible.
For Seagull Beach specifically, I found high grass that feel ethereal. I also knew that the east side of the beach was the best place to start based on lighting. Finally, I knew to tell the couple to ensure they also brought closed toe shoes for areas that had broken shells.
